Baby Blues and Pinks

How do you feel about the colors pale pink and baby blue? If you're like most of our clients, your reaction to using these in your company materials is "no way!" Often seen as childish and too "soft" for business, pink and blue rarely show up in corporate collateral.

Well, welcome to Pantone's Color of the Year: Rose Quartz and Serenity (Pantone 13-1520 and 15-3919). For the first time, Pantone has chosen two colors. Their Color of the Year is defined as "A symbolic color selection; a color snapshot of what we see taking place in our culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude."

So, what are they seeing in our culture this year that led them to pink and blue?

For one, a search for relief from stress and a need for security, given our "turbulent times". For another, a blurring of gender and less concern about stereotypes.

So far, I have only seen these pastel colors translated into fashion, household items and decor. And pairing them with other colors can change the way they are viewed. But it will take more than Pantone's trending colors to change the branding preferences of business boardrooms. The day a tech client asks for pink on their website will be the tipping point!
